Sea Fury – Old Warden VJ Display

A Display By The Royal Naval Historic Flights (RNHF) www.royalnavyhistoricflight.org.uk Sea Fury VR930 at the Shuttleworth VJ Day display on 7-8-05, flown by Cdr Paul Stone. *Note the GA aircraft overflying the aerodrome during the display – a hair raising moment, which unfortunately I’ve witnessed several times at shows there.

Iv heard at watched one of these at Duxford it was beautiful, I felt like crying when I saw it flying with a BF109 together, let’s hope the soldiers who died in the war are friends in death.

I can quite believe this plane shot down
    Mig 15 jets in Korea
-very hard for jet pilot to lock onto aircraft
    that was so manouverable
German Me 109′s had similar problems
with seemingly slow inferior Russian bi-planes in ww2
speed is not all in air combat

This sound is so extraordinary that I could switch off my screen just to listen to it!

Classic British Fighter. Love it as much as the Griffon engined Spitfire. We certainly built the best of the last piston engined bangers! And don’t they still sound great. What a sound!

    Spectacular aircraft.. completely awe-inspiring.

I too am addicted. Dad said when i was six, i ran to a Sea Fury at an airshow and sat at the rope fence waiting for it to start up.

Problem was, we got there at 9am…and she wasn’t due to display until 1pm!

the owner (Bruce Andrews) saw my enthusiasm and offered me a seat in the cockpit…which i relished.

i was amazed at the size, the smell and how hard it was for a pint-size to negotiate the step up onto the wing!

Well done, that is some film, and a great sounding aircraft. I remember the Yeovilton Sea Fury at the Lincolnshire Air Shows in the 60′s

mate…me too. I’ve been an absolute piston warbird fan since i was a kid…it was always my dream to own one of these one day. No piston fighter stands taller & meaner on the tarmac and demands more attantion than this plane. I’m in Australia and w ehave had various furies come and go within the last 20 years. I have a wonderful video (VHS) of an airshow at RNAS Nowra in 1986 that shows three operational Furies at one airshow..the RAN 75th ann. I must convert it and post ASAP you’ll love it.

The supreme imperiality of the centaurus!

    Magnificent sound!

My Grandfather used to work on these aircraft when he served on HMCS Magnificent. He has told me many stories about these aircraft. He had all the service manuals and adjustment specs for the centaurus, he showed me them once,Fascinating stuff. He passed away a few years ago and we haven’t found these manuals yet, although we’re sure he kept them (somewhere). First time I’ve ever heard one,(centaurus). He would have loved to have seen this video and heard it. Thanks for posting it.

My Grandfather served on HMCS Magnificent and has told me many stories about this aircraft and the centaurus engine, as well as the rolls royce V12. He still has the service manuals and adjustment specs for the centaurus engine. This is the first time I’ve ever actually heard it though. Too bad he passed away a few years ago, he would have loved to have seen this video.
    Thanks for posting this.

Love the sound of the engine.

  17. grazyarnie July 24th, 2010 1:10 am

actually it was inspired by the Focke Wulf…
Some Pilot landed its damaged FW 190 in Britain and the british experts examined it very well…that does not make the Sea Fury a Focke Wulf…but the truth is many ideas of the FW 190 were used and enhanced within the SeaFury…best evidence cooperation betwenn the british and germans is resulting in very good birds..no offence the Seafury remains british…but some origins are german…like it or not..its the truth

  18. r1wantone July 24th, 2010 1:47 am

    looks a little like a fw190

  19. ruspren July 24th, 2010 2:42 am

Is this VR930 if so my dad flew this aircraft in 1953 when he was in 801 squadron!

  20. metalmelvin July 24th, 2010 3:26 am

    Yeah, cool.

  21. chinagilb July 24th, 2010 4:07 am

An awsome, beautifull aircraft, gracefully flown by Paul Stone.Very nostalgic.

  22. pss75 July 24th, 2010 4:23 am

Those stripes were also used in Korea

  23. MarsFKA July 24th, 2010 4:59 am

The last word in propeller-driven fighters, and the Centaurus engine sounds magnificent. I’m just wondering, though, why an aircraft that entered service after World War 2 is wearing D-Day stripes…

  24. flyier19 July 24th, 2010 5:04 am

    Drool!

    Best sounding aircraft out there.

  25. juzzi07 July 24th, 2010 5:05 am

You just cant match the Centaurus. Nothing comes close to that brute sound! It’s a shame that there’s so many R-3550 conversions…they sound cheap in comparisin.
