I like summer blockbusters as much as the next person, and while not the best movies that Hollywood has to offer, the summer movie schedule is important to studios and moviegoers alike. There’s a tried and true method when it comes to summer blockbusters, and it goes something like this: whatever worked in the past is bound to work again. This is why the summer of 2010 is going to look quite similar to the summer of 2008.

Every once in a while the Hollywood “machine” puts out a truly spectacular, truly excellent film that will stand the test of time. Alien, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Rocky, and The French Connection to name just a few. Most of the time, however, Hollywood churns out tried and true “formula” movies. Boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, girl leaves boy, girl comes back to boy in the end. You know what I’m talking about.

One of the reasons Hollywood sticks to a formula is because they can predict, with crazy accuracy, how a certain film will do based on the performance of others similarly structured. That’s why every summer we know we’ll see lots of big action films with mega-stars known around the globe. Big action movies work in the summer, and 2010 will have no shortage of action, even if we’ve seen it all before.

Iron Man 2 looks to make another gazillion dollars as fans are hotly anticipating its release in late May. Iron Man 2 won’t be the only sequel this summer. The hugely successful Shrek franchise releases Shrek Forever After, and Sex and the City 2 will also try to capitalize on the success of its older sister. We’ll also see Woody and the rest of the gang in Toy Story 3.

Remakes are hugely popular in Hollywood, and the summer seasons are never immune from them. The biggest so far comes to us in the form of Robin Hood with Russell Crowe, which promises to be a tale of the Prince of Thieves like we’ve never seen before. We’ll also see remakes of some great modern Hollywood classics like The Karate Kid, and Footloose. We’ll also get to see The A-Team, which was a wildly successful television show that was destined for the big screen.

In the meantime, catching up on the originals or first installments of these great movies is easy when you have premium programming from Cox Cable TV. Whether you catch them on premium movie channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, or prefer them on your own schedule on Pay-Per-View or Video On Demand, you know you’re getting unedited, first run films shown the way the studios intended them to be seen!
