Binding Android: Mtk Makes Google Phone Develop Towards Replica Direction

Being considered as father of replica, cellphone chip manufacture MTK recently disclosed to the media, Android mobile phones program will be drew a charge in the middle of this year; MTK CFO Yu Ming-to expressed, Android things has a little connotation, application platform is simple, MTK will develop more applications so as to provide customers one-stop service.

The move drew attention from net users. some thought MTK turning to Google Android platform will be beneficial to the cellphones massification; but some held dissenting ideas, considered MTK as king of replica, where are, where unlucky.

Why should MTK turn to Google Android? Maybe the following reason can explain. Firstly, customers’ support to Google Android was on the rise, market prospect is brighter and clearer. According to the report, in the past one year, Samsung, HTC, LG and Motorola etc. mobile tycoons join in Android group in succession, and expressed will publish Google Android mobile phones. Besides, China Mobile, China Unioncom and China Telecom also acknowledged Google Android platform and promote vigourously. MTK smart mobile phones turn to Android; it is obviously conductive to its customer finalist carriers’ custom.

Secondly, Google Android is more representative of the future direction of smart phones. Android itself based on the platform of the open source operating system, Linux code can be downloaded free via internet, however, Microsoft charge a certain fees from users. Meanwhile, Android Market is more open. In the Google Android Market, all the developer can upload contents after registering, and all the uploaded contents can be found out immediately in the Android Market, which changed the old obtaining way through charging. Currently, Android applications has more than 20 thousand, moreover, the number had just about 10 thousand last year, almost increased with a speed of 4000 per month.

Furthermore, Android applications growth speed can be already comparable with Apple App Store, therefore, it is beneficial to MTK use Android copy iPhone’s business model, which is also the most important point that MTK turns to Google Android.

But, Google Android platform is not money tree, MTK still faces arduous challenge. MTK’s “replica” solution cause some cellphone manufactures technology deletion, thereby make “replica phones” expand, cellphone homogenization will be serious, and competitiveness is poor. So, some net users considered MTK join in Google Android is not necessarily a good thing, which will make Google Android mobile phones towards cheap copy direction

At the same time, it also faces competition from Google Android platform. Android not only faces competitions from Microsoft, but also its relying operational Linux operating system. In the field taken hold by Microsoft, users who are familiar with Window system may be in hesitation to adopt new operating system.

Emulator, Multitouch PC Software, Makes Tablets into Controllers for Traktor, More

The Apple iPad has terrific, responsive multi-touch input, but for many, using it to control music would mean carrying an iPad and a computer. That’s a cheaper combination than using a JazzMutant Lemur with a computer, but it’s still two pieces. With a number of PCs gradually adding touch capabilities, it seems inevitable that integrated touch for music will become at least a compelling option. These machines also have some features the iPad lacks, such as USB and other conventional I/O, and true pen input, which can be more precise for arts applications …and they’re traditional computers, with all the flexibility that entails.

Argentina-based DJ Pablo Martin gives CDM the scoop on his new Emulator software. The descendant of the Lemur-style MonotouchLive control, Emulator looks more mature, and adds multi-touch support. It’s ready to run Traktor out of the box, but other tools are possible, too. With a revision of HP’s TM2 expected this summer, we could have an interesting, more powerful alternative to the more limited tablets about to follow in the iPad’s footsteps. (I’ll say this – it would have been a better machine on the trip I’m on currently, both for the touch/tablet capabilities and longer battery life than my more conventional Asus laptop.)

I’ll let Pablo explain the rest. I’m in touch with HP and others, so I hope to offer some information on what these solutions are like, alongside the iPad, of course.

This are the first images i make public of my new touchscreen MIDI controller (now with mulitouch support). The older Monotouchlive is now discontinued and the new software born is called EMULATOR.

The first version i plan to launch very soon, including control for traktor on internal mode; the other interfaces are under development (traktor external ableton etc etc)

This software is designed to work with tablet PCs, the model i suggest for use with my software is the wonderful HP TM2, or the older model TM2Z. It also can be used with lenovo multitouch tablet and DELL XT tablet. All these tablets support multitouch, have capacitive digitizers, but again i suggest the HP TM2, due to it having a wonderful capacitive digitizer from WACOM; it’s really good quality tablet.
The CPU power of TM2 is perfect to run Traktor; I tested with Ableton without any troubles. Some guys think the CPU on HP TM2 doesn’t have enough power, but that is wrong.

The major problem with present touchscreen controllers is that you don’t have tactile feedback (you can’t feel with your fingers knobs, buttons, sliders etc etc), for that reason you need put your eyes all time on the touchscreen device for use the controller, and lose the focus over music software.

Emulator is a software where you have all what you need on same screen and combine the power of multitouch, the useful standard mouse and the native interface of software to be controlled all in one nice and useful GUI.

This software runs under windows 7; the first version I plan to launch only works on tablet PCs with 12.1 inch screen (1280×800). I decided to do this because the big LCD multitouch screens available on the market aren’t really accurate and enough for pro usage; [optical sensors can] generate false touch, ghost touches, etc. and you lose portability [on larger screens].

No pricing or release yet – Pablo is looking for a sponsor (HP?) – but I’ll keep you posted. Let us know what you think of the design.

Tim Exile Starts Video Blog, Makes Beatbox Light Art with Reaktor

Tim Exile, talented musician, Reaktor guru, and mad genius of interactive live performance, has started a video blog. It’s tough to describe what’s covered in the video, other than to say Tim is starting more or less an open house in his brain, which can only lead to good things. He talks live, music making, and his current plans, including a tasty-sounding open studio series in London. And through the whole thing, he has a Lite-Brite-style visualization he programmed in Reaktor, well beyond what I’ve ever been able to make Reaktor do.

It’s clearly more Tim talking directly to fans than a properly-formatted video blog, but it is starting a conversation, meaning if there’s something you’d like to see Tim do with the medium of video, now’s the time to tell him.

“Interactive music … well, well, well…”

Kling-Net: makes LED devices Plug’n Play

At ArKaos, it’s now many years we’re developing software that drives LEDs in a way or another: our media server software MediaMaster and our VJ software GrandVJ are used every day to drive LED fixtures or LED walls, and of course we have the LED Mapper extension which, combined with MediaMaster, creates a very easy solution to map visuals on complex setups of DMX driven LED walls.

However there is still something that makes it too complicated and / or too expensive for anyone to display visuals on LED devices: setup…

Simple LED fixtures rely on the DMX or ArtNet protocol to work, which means many magic numbers to type, multiplying chances that something goes wrong and prevents your little pixels to blink.. On the other hand, big LED wall components come with hardware interfaces facilitating the setup but they are most of the time so expensive that they’re not an option for most performers and clubs.

We’re in 2010 and it should not be science fiction to have a LED device with an Ethernet port that automatically ”says hello” when connected to a media server and then sends its description so the server can immediately use it without any setup. The device would contact MediaMaster and configure itself automagically by explaining its capacities like “I am a LED device with 48 x 12 pixels in 5 bits format of red green blue”.. In other words: Plug’n Play.

And of course, this should be operated by an affordable processor because you don’t want to add a PC behind each device..

Well that’s exactly what our Kling-Net protocol does. The prototype you can see on the video above is built with an inexpensive open-source electronics prototyping platform called Arduino, and as you can see, it just works.. We’ll now fine-tune it some more and decide what we’ll do with this baby.

If you want more technical info about Kling-Net, we have started to document it on a dedicated Wiki.
