Resolume Visuals
A ‘Live’ video mix recorded through Resolume VJ software using an original library of self made 3D renders, and an at the time work in progress version of the CoS remix as the audio track. As Resolume supports midi devices I decided to use my Tringer Finger midi controller to toggle the different video clips and mess with the transparencies and effects etc. Problems occured when Resolume would dip below 25 fps and the audio input which was simply the track looped and set to repeat in winamp would stay at its normal pace. This resulted in the original Resolume recordings being strangely short eg 2:30 or less, instead of the 5:20ish they were meant to be. Took a while to figure out that it was Resolume’s fps dropping from too many effects causing this pain. The fps slowdown ended up being unavoidable, even at 320×240. So to get any real visual based timing with some accuracy as the track progressed, the key frame numbers had to be calculated, eg breakdown at frame 4500, beat dropping back in at frame 6100 etc. Though even using this method it was hard to get the timing right with the frame rate fluctuating. In the end I just went with the result you see here because to get a smooth fps the effects would have had to be boring as hell. They were dumbed down a fair amount from their craziness already but another problem was my 7200rpm drive seemed to slowdown progressively the more it recorded the avi So to get this end result of 5:20 in visual form I actually had to do about …

just a quick demonstration how to create a mask for the vj software resolume (www.resolume.com) music by the wind-up robots killed my cat (www.myspace.com/twrkmc) here’s a little guide: the resolution of the second screen should be the resolution of the output in resolume (eg 640*480). in photoshop you create a file with the same resolution (transparent or black background) drag the window to the second screen. press “F” two times to go into full screen mode and hide the rulers if visible (cmd+R). choose the pen tool “P” and select “shape layers” in the bar at the top (first button). i usually choose red as the foreground/shape color. now draw one square with the pen tool. if you draw a second shape, a new layer will be created automatically. with the shapes it is possible to fine tune the squares, if you didn’t put the corners exactly. just use the direct selection tool “A”. when finished (delete the background layer and ) save the file as transparent png.
